Curvilinear was designed and made to commission for a new landmark skyscraper and luxury development, One Blackfriars on London’s South Bank. With the building’s slightly unorthodox, rounded and sail like form, the architects inspiration was possibly taken from the sculptural works of Barbara Hepworth. This theme was continued within the interior’s design and I’m sure if the budget had of allowed, sculptures by Hepworth would have been purchased for key areas of the interior.
Instead, I was lucky enough to be approached by the projects art consultant, looking to commission a design similar in style to Hepworth’s. I was keen to use the opportunity to show how strongly influenced I have been by her works and to also show how this influence doesn’t have to mean I simply try to imitate her designs.
Curvilinear was developed through a series of models, cutting and manipulating circles of paper and thin metal to finally come up with a unique 3D form. The final design could then be scaled up and made in sheet bronze and at this point the next stage of plotting positions for the intricate network of wires could be pain-stakingly figured out.
The resulting sculpture is without a doubt the most intricate, time consuming and technically challenging sculptures I have made to date.
