After graduating from the Norwich School Of Art, myself and a fellow graduate who now runs a bronze foundry, started a creative enterprise to make bespoke sculpture & design products for the home and garden. One of our first clients and patrons who has now purchased and commissioned several sculptures, approached us about a bespoke project to design a set of contemporary gates for his home in Hampshire.
After around a year of presenting concepts and designs to the client, we agreed upon this highly contemporary design. The main gates are fully automated, with a walk through side gate and then a mirrored design infill panel the opposite end.
Adam and I worked closely with a specialist stainless steel fabrication firm in Norfolk, F.W Hall, who did an outstanding job of the fabrication and also designed the engineered components such as hinges and latches for the gates.
At a fairly early stage in our careers, this was a great project to undertake, with a fantastic and understanding client. These gates remain totally unique and the client is still as happy with them as the day they were installed.
The ‘fan like’ design of the main center gates, were also a genesis which have fed into many of my more recent sculpture designs such as Apollo and Aurora. Using flat strips of bar or sheet, stacked upon one another and rotated around a point of axis.
