Working with Canadian based art consultants Union Art & Design, Thomas was commissioned to produce this sculpture for a new hotel being built in Qatar. With the sculpture being designed to go on a balcony/terrace, there was a strict weight limit of 120kg for the sculpture including a plinth. For a metal sculpture 2000mm in height with a stone plinth this was quite a challenge. To keep within this limitation, the plinth has a sub-structure of stainless steel that takes the full loading of the sculpture and this was then clad in thin sheets of limestone and made to look like a solid piece of stone.
The ‘Aurora’ sculpture form is a highly dynamic and aesthetic design, but the most striking element of this sculpture was the striking blue patination that was applied by Sculpture Castings artisan patina expert. The resulting patina and colour effect is stunning. To give the patina as much durability as possible in the harsh exterior environment it will be installed in, Thomas had the whole sculpture sprayed with a satin car body lacquer.
