The Aurora design series started with a fantastic opportunity to make a sculpture for the Crown Estate at Kingsbury House in Knightsbridge, working with London’s award winning Architects, Barr Gazetas.
I was commissioned to make a feature sculpture for the foyer of the building being redeveloped. The sculpture needed to fit inside the bay window facing out onto the street, which was quite tall and narrow. Aurora’s design progressed from others which were based on the Fibonacci sequence, though to fit within this window space, the form had to be elongated.
This version of the Aurora design is scaled down version of the original, made as a commission for a local business man and supporter of the arts in Norfolk.
‘Named after the polar lights, the sculptures design is directly influenced by the 3 – 6 degree wide latitude band known as the auroral zone, which was used to dictate the degree of rotation of the bronze bars around a central axis, mimicking the magnetic pull of geomagnetic poles on charged particles in the atmosphere. The chemical patination produced was as a direct reference to the stunning array of colours visible in the aurora light display.’
