Originally designed for a bespoke commission in London. The client was looking to explore ideas for a wall mounted brass sculpture, which I came up with this design for. It became clear though that the wall intended to mount the sculpture upon would not be strong enough and that to reinforce it sufficiently would be too costly. Instead the client decided to look at having a console table in the space and to have a free standing sculpture on the console.
The wall mounted concept was developed further, being reduced in scale, but made thicker so that it could be self supporting. The trickiest element was keeping an elegant ‘fan’ like form, whilst creating a wide enough section at the base to have fixings strong enough to hold the weight of the form.
The resulting design is one of my most successful and favorite pieces to date. The origins of the design are heavily influenced by Fibonacci, although the proportions of this form do not strictly adhere to its Math. As a highly aesthetic form, even being made from incredible rigid straight pieces of metal, the sculpture flows and curves from every and all angles, transforming in shape from the various view points.
This sculpture is ideal and best suited for an interior setting, with the brass being sealed to stop any tarnishing or discolouration. Brass requires a high level of maintenance and additional expense if desired outdoors, so I recommend stainless steel as the best alternative for an exterior version of this sculpture.
